Our trip to Zambia was one of the most eye-opening and rewarding experiences of my life. Over two weeks, we explored the country, met incredible people, and took part in projects that challenged our perspectives on education, community, and gratitude. The trip initially took us to a small town called Nsobe. We rode bikes through a game park, went on a safari, and even took part in snake handling.

Not only this we got to experience going into a school for the afternoon to meet some of the locals. Personally I was lucky enough to play circle games all afternoon with a kindergarten group. The children ranged from age 2-6, and having the opportunity to connect with each and every one of them was an experience I will never forget.  Beyond the excitement, the most memorable moments for everyone came from connecting with people and seeing the community aspect of the Zambian culture.

After a few days in a rural village, we moved to a large city called Kitwe where we stayed for the rest of the trip.  One of the most powerful experiences was visiting a Pentecostal Holiness church. The energy and warmth of the congregation were overwhelming. People sang, danced, and worshipped with such joy and passion that it was impossible not to be moved. Our group was invited to sing a song during the service. The crowd’s response was full of encouragement and the atmosphere was buzzing. It was a moment that showed us all how music and faith can bring people together, no matter where you’re from.

We also spent a week at Kawama Community School, which Cranleigh School has supported for many years. We taught subjects like first aid, maths, art skills, and phonics using the Jolly Phonics programme. The children were so eager to learn, and their enthusiasm made every lesson a joy. Even with limited resources, their willingness to succeed was inspiring. It showed me the power of education. Not just as a way to learn, but as a tool for hope and change in their society. The teachers’ dedication and the students’ curiosity left a lasting impression on us, and is definitely something we have all taken home and applied to our everyday lives.

Outside the classroom, we experienced more of Zambian life through home visits, where we met local families and saw how hard adults work to provide for their children. Despite the challenges, there was a deep sense of community and happiness. We also took part in metalwork projects, as a form of work experience to see another aspect of the locals’ lives. We learned new skills and saw how creativity and craftsmanship are passed down through generations. Attending an Independence Day service was another highlight. It was full of colour, pride, and celebration, reminding us of Zambia’s rich history and spirit of community/togetherness.

The work that Beyond Ourselves is doing in Zambia is truly remarkable. By supporting schools, developing community projects, and focusing on long-term sustainability, they’re helping to create real, lasting change. Seeing the impact firsthand made me realise that volunteering isn’t just about giving; it’s about learning, sharing, and growing alongside others.

This trip has changed how we see the world. I’ve learned to appreciate the value of education, the importance of gratitude, and the strength of community. Moving forward, I want to use these experiences to inspire others, appreciate what we have, to help where we can, and to remember that even small actions can make a big difference. Zambia reminded me that joy, kindness, and hope can thrive anywhere. Whilst we went there expecting to help others, each and everyone of us has taken away more from the people of Zambia than we could have imagined. All of which are lessons worth carrying home and spreading as widely as we can.
