At Southgate on Tuesday both the Girls U18 and Girls U16 teams became outdoor South Hockey Champions.
The U16s started with a tighter game than expected against Wellington. By playing down the middle, we played into their hands, but we managed a 1-0 win. We then completely overwhelmed a good St George’s side playing almost the entire match in their half. A one goal cushion, however, was not enough and in the last 10 seconds of the match, St George’s nicked a well-taken equaliser. So to the final game versus Beaconsfield. Legs were beginning to tire and this played into our hands as we started to use our superior passing skills. The goals flowed in the second half and we ran out 5-1 winners, ensuring we finished top of the group by better goal difference.
The U18s started with their most difficult game against Kingston Grammar School, but a simply sensational first 15 minutes that included some
stunningly quick passing around their D yielded 4 unanswered goals! With such a lead we were able to rotate our squad and the final result of 4-2 put us in a strong position. We then played well against Reeds to give ourselves a two goal cushion, but they got one back and the second half was a closer encounter than we had planned, although we managed to stay ahead winning 2-1. After an early scare against King Edward School, Southampton, in which the opposition had the ball in our net only for a short corner to be given, the team then turned on the style and cruised to a 5-0 victory to round off an excellent day.
Congratulations to both teams for automatically qualifying for the National Finals in March.
