On Monday 20th February, ten members of the Tom Avery Society had the pleasure of travelling up to London to listen to the tremendous adventures of twelve extraordinary people who raise awareness for the charity Hope & Homes for Children by taking part in the most daring events. The international charity aims to ensure all children have the chance to grow up in the comfort of a loving family. They work to close children’s institutes and reform childcare systems. The speakers ranged from Chris Martin, an ex-Great British rower to Andy Campbell, a wheelchair explorer and even Ben Keene who rented a Fijian island and began his own tribe!

The speakers had six minutes and twenty slides to present their astonishing adventures; a very challenging concept in itself. Every one of the speakers amazed the audience at some stage of their presentations, however, an exceptional 16 year-old school boy who is an environmental campaigner, Parker Liautaud, told the audience of his polar adventure in the North Pole; becoming one of the youngest ever to walk to the North Pole in the second fastest time ever recorded was an inspiring speech to hear.

The remarkable evening saw £7,800 raised for Hope & Homes for Children, which could pay to find and train 30 foster families who will provide a loving family for children currently growing up in damaging orphanages, completely turning their lives around.

The talks were thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and have certainly inspired some to begin adventures of their own.
