For this term’s Tom Avery Lecture we were treated to a talk by Dr Clare Roche on the role of women in the “Golden Age” of British mountaineering, when men were men, sporting extravagant facial hair and women were supposedly confined to home and hearth.

Many myths were blown open, heroic deeds were recounted and some of the surprising advantages of being able to wear a skirt whilst out on an exposed glacier were revealed. Historians, feminists and politicians as well as mountaineers all came away with plenty of food for thought. Many thanks.

Next term: Dr Simon Young will tell us how he got on over the summer on Pic Lenin in Kyrgyzstan.
