For some glory, for others the least enjoyable 15 minutes of the term, for most something in between. Monday evening saw the new Fourth Form race each other around the school cross country course. After last year’s muted affair, it was great to have the return of capacity crowds as the houses came down, flags waving and music blaring, to support their newest members as they set off from the Outdoor Ed Centre before walking across to the Cubitt cricket nets to cheer them home.

In the girls’ race it came down to a sprint finish as Martha R. beat Eliza L.(both West) to the tape by just two seconds, in a time of 13.22. The overall winners from the girls houses was Rhodes who managed to place four girls’ inside the top ten.

In the boys’ race Ollie Winter (East) romped home with a time of 11.43. The overall winners from the boys’ houses was Cubitt. Their incredible consistency, placing ten runners inside the top twenty, saw them win by some considerable margin. At last Mr Cooke’s tradition of taking them for a pre-race training run around the course seems to have paid off.

There were around 125 runners who took to the start line from several different schools on what was a beautiful sunny afternoon. Special mention should go to Charlotte H. (Martlet) who came first in the Senior Girls’ race.
