Ex Cultu Robur – From Our Culture Comes Strength
Our motto defines every aspect of school life and the benefit of a Cranleigh education.
Our Aims
To educate young people to be the best they can be so that they thrive in all aspects of their lives, professionally and personally.
To motivate a new generation of leaders who think globally, act with integrity and make courageous contributions to an ever-changing world.
To develop critical thinkers, creatives, communicators and characters who understand the importance of curiosity, generosity and humility.
Our Ethos
We are unapologetically ambitious for all our students.
We believe everyone is capable of outstanding academic performance, by making progress within the healthy, happy and inclusive atmosphere we work so hard to create.
We expect students to work hard in lessons, play fair on the sports field and take feedback when it’s offered.
We work in partnership with families to provide a balanced and truly personalised education that nurtures intellectual curiosity, personal responsibility and the well-being of every student.
We set our young people up for success without being highly selective. Whatever your ability or interest, you will find a champion at Cranleigh.
From this culture, our students find the strength to:
ASPIRE BOLDLY by setting ambitious goals, embracing challenges and striving for excellence. And by demonstrating curiosity, creativity, and an appetite for problem-solving.
BE YOURSELF by acting with authenticity, self-awareness, and confidence. And by demonstrating resilience, integrity, and emotional intelligence.
CARE FOR OTHERS by practising kindness, empathy and service. And by demonstrating respect, compassion and collaboration.
This is the spirit of Cranleigh.
Outreach
Reading for pleasure can transform children’s lives. Literacy is the single biggest factor in promoting social mobility and reading for pleasure is one of the most important indicators of a child’s future success and educational attainment. When a child loves reading, they will do better at school and have improved mental wellbeing. That’s why our outreach programme is focused on helping the children in our community to love books, and helping schools to instil a reading culture.
OutreachEquity, Diversity & Inclusion
Ex Cultu Robur, our school motto, translates to ‘from culture comes strength’. Traditionally, this would have meant teaching classical traditions and preparing pupils to lead across a range of industries. Today, it is the beacon lighting our journey towards greater equity, diversity and inclusion at Cranleigh and beyond.
Equity, Diversity & InclusionSocial Purpose
In line with the principles of Cranleigh Giving, Cranleigh encourages pupils to think beyond themselves. Social purpose is a central feature of its ethos and activity. Cranleigh School and Cranleigh Prep School are committed to sharing resources and mutual sharing of expertise to improve the educational outcomes of children and young people wherever they are based. It is seeking to deepen and expand its commitment to local partnerships and local access to Cranleigh Schools’ facilities.
Social PurposeZambia Partnership
Since 2011 Cranleigh School has been partnering with Beyond Ourselves to offer quality education to orphans and vulnerable children in the Copperbelt region of Zambia. In particular Cranleigh has a long lasting and meaningful relationship with Kawama Community School in Kitwe. Over this time, the generous support from the Cranleigh community has provided the building and maintenance of six classrooms, a toilet block and kitchen, and given nearly a 1,000 children access to a high standard primary education. The District Education Board cite Kawama Community School as an excellent example of practice for other Community Schools in the Copperbelt. Many of our students have had the opportunity to visit Kawama and this reflection from the most recent trip highlights the impact of these trips on our students and staff.
Zambia PartnershipSustainability
As a leading school that seeks to be forward-thinking, caring and globally responsible, Cranleigh School recognises and embraces the importance of developing and implementing ‘environmental sustainability’ in order to minimise our planetary and environmental impact, with especial focus on reducing our Carbon Footprint, safeguarding the diverse beauty and abundance of the planet, recognising our place within its complex systems; future-proofing the school against the changing implications of Climate Change, ensuring energy and resource security; meeting our wider legal, social and communal obligations in terms of environmental and social governance (ESG); producing school leavers and Cranleigh community members who understand the importance of environmental awareness, having a positive engagement with nature and sustainable behaviour.
