Last weekend was a busy one for everyone at school.
The rugby club had a triangular fixture against Hurstpierpoint and Marlborough. Special recognition goes to the U16A and U16B staff and teams, who travelled to Marlborough after the Open Morning. The U16B team rebounded from last week’s loss with convincing wins in both their matches. Impressively, the school achieved a near clean sweep of victories against Marlborough – congratulations to all involved. The 4th XV played Christ’s Hospital 2nd XV, narrowly losing by just one point in a fantastic match. Credit to the team for taking on a higher-level opponent. The 1st XV remain unbeaten with two wins and yesterday it was great to see the U15B’s play so well against St George’s.
The girls’ hockey teams also showed up in full force, with a special mention to the senior players who enabled the school to field five teams on a Saturday—something rare among schools. In terms of performance, there were some standout displays. The U14A team was brilliant in their 6-2 win over Wellington, showcasing great team spirit and competitiveness. The U14B team secured a 1-0 victory, thanks to an excellent defensive effort. There were also wins from the U15D, U15B, U16B, and 3rd XI teams, with draws from the 2nd XI, U15A, and 4th XI against Reed’s 3rd XI. The 1st XI fought hard, coming back from a 3-0 halftime deficit to score two goals in the second half, nearly completing a remarkable comeback.
Teams of the Weekend: After narrowly missing out last week, the 3rd XV rugby team earns the honour this time, delivering an incredible 60-0 win and remaining unbeaten this season, scoring 162 points and conceding just 8. The second team of the weekend was a tough call between the U14A girls’ hockey and U14A boys’ rugby teams. Ultimately, the U14A rugby team was recognized for their hard-fought 15-14 victory over Marlborough. The team showed great character and effort, fully deserving the win. A special shout out to the U15A boys and their coaches, who stayed after training to referee, coach, and support from the side-lines. It was fantastic to see such strong peer support.
This week has also been packed with sports leading up to the half-term break. Our 1st VII netballers were knocked out of the cup in the 2nd round, losing 21-29, but our U14s enjoyed two great days of netball, winning 3 and drawing 1 of their 5 games at the Surrey Schools tournament. They followed this up with an excellent cup win against Winchcombe School on Tuesday.
The badminton team played against Reed’s on Thursday, and the Fives team took on Charterhouse, with the U14 age group securing a win. The golf team also had their annual Old Cranleighan match. Additionally, the U16 boys’ indoor hockey team competed in the Indoor Surrey Finals, and while they didn’t progress to the nationals, a huge well done to the squad for their efforts and the valuable lessons learned for next year.
Looking ahead to this Saturday, we have a mix of matches: rugby teams in the Gower Games and a smaller block fixture against Brighton, while the girls’ hockey teams will play a mix of indoor House and internal matches.
As always, more information is available on our sports desk here.
Wishing you all a restful half-term break.
