Record-breaking exam results
The School celebrated record-breaking A Level exam results this summer, with over 25% of all A2 grades awarded an A* and over 50 per cent of A2 grades being A/A*. Several students attained A* grades in all their subjects: Karthik Suresh attained four, while Hattie Allison, Georgia Beaumont, Sebastian Haddock, Cameron Henderson, Nathaniel McAleese-Park, Louisa Richards, Katarzyna Sowa and Angus Young attained three each.
Cranleigh also celebrated its best ever GCSE results, with almost a third of all grades achieved being an A* and almost two thirds either an A* or A. Furthermore, an outstanding 86.9 per cent of grades were A* to B.
Senior Maths Challenge 2014
Matylda Buczkowska (LVIth) got through to the next level of the Senior Maths Challenge (the Kangaroo round) and Alasdair Johnston (LVIth) got through to the top level, which is the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 – an outstanding achievement.
Institute Of Physics A2 Physics Challenge 2014

Young Enterprise
On Wednesday 19th November, five Young Enterprise companies from Cranleigh took to the stage at the old Guildhall in Guildford and presented their Business Plans to The Dragon’s Den and an audience of 17 other companies from schools in the West Surrey area. Each company had created its own products and services, opened a business bank account with HSBC and consulted with a Professional Business Advisor. The Cranleigh pupils behind ‘OriOri’, led by MD Matylda Buczkowska, so impressed the judges with their business acumen and their business – creating beautiful Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter and Wedding decorations using origami – that that they left the Dragon’s Den with 2nd prize.

Pupil Achievements
Noah Frett played the Last Post & Reveille with great emotion and purity of sound for Cranleigh Village and the School Remembrance Services.
Theo Golden played Last Post and Reveille for Rusper Village and Ben Wili played Last Post and Reveille for Blackheath Village.
There has been some stunning singing from Cranleigh Voices this term at various external events. The soloists at the various performances deserve particular mention: Ben Wili, Fayruz Megdiche, Tim Ayling, Alex Moor, Theo Golden, Olivia Chesser & Katherine Carr.
Helen Wareham Performance Competition
This term has seen the Senior performance events and the following have made it through to the Helen Wareham Final:

Piano: Senior Section: Alice Simmonds (Piano), Fayruz Megdiche (Piano) & Jakub Bartoshevski (Organ).

SPORT
Hockey
National Finals
Cranleigh Hockey has four teams into the National Finals – an exceptional achievement.
- The Girls’ U16s and Boys’ U16s both qualified as South Regional Champions. The National Indoor Finals will be played on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 January 2015. It is the first time ever that Cranleigh Boys U16s have qualified.
- The Girls’ U18s and Girls’ U14s both qualified as South Regional Champions at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The National Outdoor Finals will be played on Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th February 2015. It is the first time ever that the Cranleigh Girls’ U18s have qualified.
The Boys U18s came top of their South heats group, before winning the subsequent quarter-final 5-0 against Reeds School, Cobham.
Individual Selections
Following selection from County level, 22 Cranleighans were invited to attend Junior Regional Performance Centres (JRPC) over the summer months.
At these, 18 Cranleighans were successful in being selected to play in the Tier 1 Regional matches. This was the biggest number of hockey players that Cranleigh has had reaching this stage of what is essentially now an England team selection process.
Following this, 10 pupils were invited to take part in the final stages of the England selection process. In the U18 Girls, Olivia Camsey and Chloe Nicholls (Wessex Leopards) played against Charlotte Calnan (Saxon Tigers) at the Futures Cup in Cannock. Megan Batchelor was at the U17 Girls’ High Performance Assessment Camp (HIPAC) a few days before, while Zoe Allchurch, Autumn Brown, Katherine Carr, Izzy Petter and Fifi Robinson took part in the U15 Girls’ HIPAC, and Harry Gough in the U15 Boys’ HIPAC at the same venue.
Rugby
The 1st XV beat Tonbridge 21-20 for the first time in Cranleigh history. Ollie Rodriguez and Ben Gasson were the try scorers, with Rory Kennedy kicking the decisive penalty with 14 minutes to go.
Cranleigh enjoyed a clean sweep of victories at U16 level (A, B and C teams) against Wellington – with the U16As beating a previously unbeaten Wellington side 27-12.
Ben Gasson, Ben Sackey and Dino Lamb-Cona have been selected for matches for the U18 Elite Rugby Academy side at Harlequins.
Michael Upfold and Harry Binnion have been selected for the U16 county side.
2013 1st XV players Sam Arnold and Charlie Piper have joined Ulster and Harlequins on professional contracts, with both players already involved in A-league matches. Sam Arnold has been training with the U20s squad even though he is a year young.
Netball
Congratulations to the U16 Netball squad, who won the County playoffs and will compete in the County finals in March.
Swimming
In the Surrey round of the English Schools Swimming Association Championships (ESSA), the team of PJ Cunningham, Emma Grainger, Tash Gerrard and Abbie Sterry claimed a Silver medal in the Medley Relay – a fantastic achievement so early on in the year.
Riding
In the NSEA National Championships, the Cranleigh team took Silver and Bronze in Dressage and Bronze in the Mini-Arena Eventing and were in the final line-up in the Novice and Intermediate Arena Eventing.
Cranleigh riders are also the South East Regional Grassroots Champions 2014.
National Schools’ Kayaking Marathon Champions 2014
This year saw Cranleigh’s first attempt at this competition – and an extraordinary performance from our squad saw the Cranleigh ‘Gold’ team (James York, Jemima Young, Noah Frett, Abby Frett, Aiden Steele and Ben Strickland) come in third, while the Cranleigh ‘Blue’ team (Laurence Fortescue, Robert Harrison, Charlie Norton, Abi Dahl, Alastair Loedolff and Daniel Plewman) finished first, becoming National Schools’ Kayaking Marathon Champions 2014.
Water Polo
Cranleigh’s Water Polo captain, George Berry, has already exceeded last year’s total goal tally for the year, with 18 goals this term.
Sailing
Piers Nicholls has been selected for the transitional GB squad for 29ers, and will be training throughout the winter for the World Championships in Pwllheli, Wales next summer.
American Football
Mario Marset Ehrle has been selected for the World U19 American Football team squad (a squad selected from every country except from the USA). The World U19s will be playing the USA U19s on 1st February 2015.
GP2 and F4 Motor Racing
OC Jolyon Palmer clinched the drivers’ title in the GP2 series (a feeder for F1) with a stunning victory in Russia, wrapping up the Championship with three races to spare. The 23-year-old becomes the first Briton to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2006 and now has his targets firmly set on graduating to Formula 1 in 2015.
Jolyon also made a very competitive official F1 debut test at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit. Driving for Sahara Force India, 23-year-old Palmer posted the fourth quickest time late in the day, finishing just 0.004s behind 2014 Championship runner-up Nico Rosberg.
Will Palmer, Jolyon’s brother, is the 2014 BRDC F4 Winter Champion, after securing victory in the final race of the series at Brands Hatch. Palmer took the championship with 239 points, 34 clear of di Mauro. For winning the championship, Palmer receives free entry to the main BRDC F4 season next year.
CHARITY
This term saw South girls delivering a total of 216 Christmas shoeboxes to the Samaritan’s Purse warehouse in Guildford, smashing last year’s record!
