The first lunch-time recital in the 26-concert series of Bach’s complete organ music was given by Philip Scriven on Tuesday 11th October. The concerts alternate between 12.30 and 1.10 pm (as on the 18th) and Philip made it clear in introducing this second step on the journey (after the previous week’s evening recital) that audience members are welcome to come and go at any time during the concerts. Sandwiches are available before and afterwards.

The music in this concert was especially uplifting and enthralling: the ten pieces that comprise the Great Catechism from the Clavierübung III. Philip’s brief but illuminating introduction not only gave us musical signposts, but also made it clear how Bach’s music was dedicated to the greater glory of God: Ad maiorem Dei gloriam.
