Despite four of the dressage team having to perform their tests in a hail storm during the afternoon, the team of Tom Lane and Hattie Allison (Novice tests) and Millie Adorian and Phoebe Osborn (Prelim tests) were crowned Surrey Champions and qualified for the National Championships in October where they will be hoping to retain their National title! Our second team of Phoebe Osborn and Lise Taunton-Fenton (Novice tests) and Hattie Allison and Emily Brock (Prelim tests) finished the day in fourth place and both Hattie and Amelia just missed out on individual qualifications in the big Prelim Class, finishing in third and fourth respectively.
The show jumping started with the Mini 70cm class where we had to contest with just a team of three. All three team members, Sophie Miller, Lara Partridge and Phoebe Wates had the same plank down in the jump-off phase to leave us on a total of 12 faults and in third place.
The Novice 80cm team of Emily Brock, Phoebe Wates, Sophie Miller and Amelia Adorian produced four good rounds with clears from both Amelia and Phoebe, resulting in this team becoming Surrey Champions. A great result for this team and a very fast time for Phoebe meaning that she finished in sixth place individually.
The Intermediate 90cm team of Fred Philips, Hattie Allison, Tom Lane and Amelia Adorian just missed out on the title, finishing in third place, with a lovely clear from Amelia. Emily Brock, riding for our second team had a storming round to finish in third place individually, one of her best results ever in a school competition.
And then the heavens opened… and although dressage continued the ground turned very slippery, very quickly and jumping over an open course did not seem like a good idea. So amidst the comedy of stuck lorries and jack-knifed trailers, we all bowed gracefully out at this point, most of us getting out of the mud under our own steam but some needing the tractor to lend a helping hand!
Next Sunday Cranleigh host their own National Qualifier for Arena Eventing at Berkshire College and our own riders will be hoping to qualify in the remaining discipline, having posted qualifications for show jumping already this year.
