As the Olympic Torch Relay begins, three different Cranleighans will be involved with the Olympic flame on its journey through the U.K. After flying in the torch from Olympia, the relay began its 8,000-mile journey at Land’s End, Cornwall, on May 19th and it will reach the Olympic Stadium in London on July 27th. Each section of the Cranleigh community will be represented through current student Paddy Wilson (North, LVI), current staff member Steve Batchelor, and OC Harry Adolphus (East, 2011).

Paddy was nominated by the main Olympic sponsor Samsung for being the youngest ever junior captain of Sunningdale Golf Club, whose two courses are both in the top twelve golf courses in Britain, as Samsung sponsor Sunningdale as well. Paddy will be running 300 metres in Dunstable, to the north of London, on July 9th.

On July 20th, Harry will be carrying the torch through a section of Guildford during the torch’s route through Surrey. It was Harry’s idea to start Go The Distance 4 in 2010, a scheme which paired a severely injured soldier with Cranleigh, giving both friendship and financial support.

Guildford’s Olympic relay day will feature a free ticketed celebration event at Stoke Park, an event Surrey Council hopes will attract thousands. Olympian Steve Batchelor, who won hockey gold in Seoul at the 1988 Games, will be interviewed on-stage at Stoke Park. We wish all three the very best as the nation prepares for London 2012 to begin.
