Last weekend was a busy one for the Cranleigh riders with National Qualifying competitions on both Saturday and Sunday.
Four senior riders travelled to Sparsholt on Saturday to try to qualify for the National Championships at Open level in the Arena Eventing competition, the only height at which we previously did not have a qualification for October 2012. Tom Lane, Hattie Allison, Christi Radkiewicz and Amelia Adorian were unlucky in the Intermediate class not to be more highly placed given that they were one of only two teams to have three of their riders complete with zero jumping penalties. However, they made up for the disappointment in the Open class, despite the downpour that started just as our first rider went into the ring, and finished in a strong second place to secure the qualification they had wanted.
On Sunday six teams competed in a Show Jumping qualifier at Royal Leisure, Henfield. The minis booked a second team into the Championships by finishing in second place (Charlotte Livingstone, Charlie Johnson, Olivia Nathan and Sophie Miller) and the Intermediate team of just three riders (Erin McCombe, Caileigh Faure and Chantelle Phillips) also finished in second place on a zero score to qualify. The Open team (Tom Lane, Hattie Allison, Fred Philips, Amelia Adorian) went one better and won their class (Haribo all round at prize-giving made their day!). Fred then contested the individual advanced class and finished in second place to secure a place for himself at the Championships.
A very successful weekend and we are now set to be represented at every level at every discipline at the National Championships, a feat that will not be repeated by many other schools in the country (if any!).
