Many congratulation to William Stocks having his animated art work ‘The Journey‘ on display in the shortlisted category of the Royal Academy A Level Online Exhibition 2013. From 1450 submissions from across the country, a total of 110 works were shortlisted before a final 35 were selected. William’s work can be found on the second page of the shortlisted gallery. ‘The Journey’ was produced in his LVIth year and forms part of his Pre-U Art submission.
William is taking up a place to read animation at Bournemouth College of Art next year. In his submission William wrote:
“I am strongly influenced by the works of Laurie Lee, Rene Laloux and Hayao Miyazaki. Through these influences I have been compelled to create works which are centred around the themes of mental and physical journeys which humanity takes. Much of my work looks at the struggle of the human condition, the development of man and the search to discover how childhood influences how one develops into an adult. My work is predominantly sculpture based. The film depicts the journey of mental pain which we all take in life. The set which the figure travels on depicts the two halves of mentality – monotony and pain. The figure represents all of humanity – it carries out the journeys, physical and mental struggles which we all take and have in life. The stripping away of the figure’s flesh highlights man’s frequent mental and physical exposure to the world through its follies.”
