The Schools’ two rugby sevens teams (U18 and U15) both got to the semi-finals of their tournaments this week.
On Wednesday the U18 side competed at the Gulliver’s Sevens tournament at Richmond. The side won their group, winning all three games including scoring a stunning 141 points in the three matches. They qualified top of their group and were drawn against Whitgift in the last 16 round. The game was a close affair with the school winning 29-24 in a terrific game. This meant the 1st team had beaten Whitgift in both the XV’s and VII’s seasons this year.
They faced Eton in the quarter final resulting in a hard fought victory 31-19. Their place in the semi-final put them into the top four out of the 46 sides there. They narrowly lost to Beechen Cliff who are part of Bath rugby. The side were terrific throughout the day and after making the final at Hampton Sevens three weeks earlier, are certainly once again flying the flag for the School after last year’s Rosslyn park cup success.
The U15’s went to the Surrey Sevens for the very first time on Thursday. The team were drawn in a very tough group but managed to win all their matches, including a great win over fellow semi-finalists Wimbledon college.
The boys have been playing hockey this term but they have done some extra seven sessions during the last three weeks. They beat Hampton in the quarter final but then they sadly lost in the semi-final after showing great character throughout the day.
Being in the top four in the county was a great achievement when you consider how most had never played sevens before.
