In a first for the Music department at Cranleigh last Friday’s ‘Summer Concert’ was held in the Chapel and the audience were treated to a spectacle of music from the major ensembles within the school.
A broad range of music was offered from the Symphony Orchestra’s performances of Beethoven’s ‘Coriolan’ overture to Concert Band’s ‘Theme from the Lion King’. Another Summer Concert first placed the Big band before the interval to send everyone to the interval drinks with a ‘swing’ in their step. A particular highlight of their performance was the intricate arrangement of Lennon and McCartney’s ‘Here, There and Everywhere’ with a solo from the evermore talented Reuben Gray.
The intimate and atmospheric setting of the Chapel seemed to enhance the efforts and polished performances of all the ensembles but it was in the String Orchestra’s detailed reading of Glazunov’s ‘Theme and Variations’ that the acoustic was really able to shine and further bring the depth of expression in the score to life. All in all a wonderful evening was had by all and our young performers should be thoroughly proud of their efforts and development over the past academic year.
