Cranleigh provided the usual team to operate one of the two scoreboards on the 18th green at the 146th Open golf championships, recently held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in South Lancashire. Inside the iconic yellow box, high above the green, the team (looking very smart in their Hugo Boss jackets and caps provided to all volunteers this year) kept the spectators informed with the manually operated leader board, along with details of the scores and names of each group of approaching players.

Our team consisted of 14 current and ex-pupils, plus four staff members (Sarah Greenwood, Carolyn Nicholls, Gareth Pritchard, and Dom Britt). It is hard work, but very rewarding. In time off between shifts, it was a privilege to be able to join the spectators watching the top golfers in the world, whether sitting in a stand, following players alongside the links fairways, or relaxing on beanbags in front of the giant screen in the spectator village.

Cranleigh and Charterhouse have operated the two 18th green scoreboards for over 30 years. It is a great honour at such a high-profile international event, but a huge responsibility too. Doing the job well is very important with so many eyes looking at the scoreboards, and it is gratifying to register that the Cranleigh team has built up a reputation for being professional, efficient and capable in their approach to the task.
