Last week two Cranleigh teams competed in the prestigious St George’s College Sixes Hockey tournament and performed excellently.

In Pool D we started with a great show of passing hockey to beat a strong St Edwards side. We continued this form throughout the rest of the pool games against Tormead, Streatham, Latymer and St Georges B, scoring over 20 goals in the process, with many of them being great passing movements from one end of the pitch to the other. The only side to beat us was the Wellington team who won the national U16 title last season. This resulted in a Plate quarter final against Ardingly who reached the U18 national finals last season. Going into a 1-0 lead, it took a goal two minutes from time for Ardingly to grab a draw and then to get another in extra time to take the game.

In Pool B, a tough encounter against Kent College and a rather lackluster performance resulted in a 1-1 draw that could have gone either way. Wins against Epsom, PGS, Gordons and Reeds were completed by a difficult 1-0 win over Beaconsfield High that meant we won the pool on goal difference over Kent College (who went on to win the Plate competition).

The semi-final was against Wellington and although we created a couple more chances than them, it was a tight affair that was still 0-0 after extra time. However, a 2-1 shootout scoreline saw us through to the final against St George’s. The first half was close, with half chances both ends, but we had more possession in the second half – it finally paid off and we ran out 1-0 winners.

Richard Organ, Director of Hockey, said “It was really useful to get the whole outdoor squad playing a lot of hockey under intense conditions at this stage of the season. Some of the passing moves were great to watch and this bodes well for the forthcoming season.”
