On Wednesday 27th November, Cranleigh’s Sixth Form students of Spanish participated in the annual Spanish Department Sixth Form Evening. The overall theme this year was that of Christmas (La Navidad), and in groups students researched and gave presentations on various aspects of Hispanic Christmas traditions. The focus of these presentations ranged from Christmas in Spain and the infamous grape-eating tradition at New Year to the day of the little candles (El día de las velitas) which is celebrated in Colombia. Kitty Clements and Harvey Stiles told us about the annual Spanish Christmas Lottery, otherwise known as ‘El Gordo’, Scarlett Schutte and Robin Greenstock described an unusual Catalan tradition involving an addition to family nativity scenes, and Freya Johnson and Lotty Cunningham explained the significance of the Mexican Posadas in December.

These detailed presentations were complemented by poems by Lope de Vega and Gabriela Mistral, which were read confidently by James Patient and Alex Hughes, our Lower Sixth Form Spanish AS students.

The Cranleigh School Spanish teachers were impressed by the fluency with which students read, and the effort put into preparing and researching information on the assigned topics. The evening was hosted flawlessly by our two presenters, Nina Rogers and Chiara Gardner, and ended merrily with the sampling of quesadillas and panqueques, and with a game of ‘sillas musicales.’
