On Thursday evening Cranleigh hosted a young voter election hustings event in advance of the upcoming general election. Students from schools across the constituency gathered in the Emms Centre for a detailed ‘question time’ session with the five candidates standing to be the next MP for Guildford.

Anne Milton (Independent), Anne Rouse (Labour), Angela Richardson (Conservative), Zoe Franklin (Liberal Democrat) and John Morris (Peace) were all put on the spot with a variety of different questions on issues facing young voters. The event was jointly hosted as an initiative of Cranleigh Being and The Purvis Society, and was introduced by the Chairs of these two committees, Ella Job and Henry Mould. They started the evening by playing to the candidates a short video of different students explaining what they believed to be the most important issue facing young voters at the upcoming election.

The hustings finished with closing statements from each candidate, and all of them stayed behind afterwards to take additional questions from many of the students who were keen to hear more. With one week to go until election day, it looks like Guildford is going to be an extremely tight race, meaning that the 18-25 year old vote will be more important than ever in deciding who will be the next MP for the constituency.
