Lockdown inevitably highlighted a need to focus on aspects of mental wellness. So, this term we’ve explored more film-based Drama and we’ve focused it on mental health. Our usual House plays, which need an audience and mixed year groups, transitioned into the launch of a brand new House film competition.

Cranleigh’s four boys’ and four girls’ houses are affiliated into pairs and pupils from the paired houses worked together to create four brilliant co-ed films tackling social issues.

Pupils voted for their favourite films and the overall competition was judged by Mr Iain Weatherby, who writes comedy and drama for TV and film. He’s also a Trustee of the Charlie Waller Trust, an organisation that promotes mental wellness and partners with Cranleigh’s PSHE programme.

Martlet/East won the Best Film award for 1:4. Georgie M. was awarded Best Editing for the Rhodes/Loveday film, The Pleasure Principle and Jess E. won Best Original Score for the same film.

Emily H. scooped the award for Best Supporting Actor, Bella B. won Best Actor, and Poppy E. won Best Director, all for their roles in 1:4. Sachin S. was awarded Best Cinematography for his film, Untitled, for West/North.

All the films can be viewed by clicking the links below. Well done to all our actors and film makers. Lockdown has definitely created more opportunities for Drama, though we miss our audiences and look forward to at least a few performances over the coming academic year.
