Lower Sixth Geographers embarked on their first experiences of fieldwork at Cranleigh, as COVID disrupted their opportunities to do so at GCSE.

On Thursday 19th May, the students enjoyed a walk-and-talk around East Head spit and the salt marsh, applying their knowledge of coastal landscape systems and the effects of human management to the real world. Thanks in particular to Mr Emley who led these discussions with great enthusiasm.

Pupils were given the opportunity to practice a variety of fieldwork methods in advance of beginning their NEA coursework module later this term. This included measuring beach profiles, assessing the quality of coastal management, counting wave frequency and even using oranges to measure the rates of longshore drift – one even went further than 50m in a minute.

On Monday 23rd May, the same group of students ventured into Guildford to practice a variety of Human Geography fieldwork methods, using some of the latest technology to collect their data on smartphones and iPads. They enjoyed being able to tackle difficult techniques such as questioning members of the public!

Both days proved very useful for the students and they were able to develop their practical skills in advance of the coursework next year, it was lovely to get out and about in the real world.
