For the first time, our rugby sevens squad entered two teams into the Surrey U18 Sevens Tournament. The 1st VII competed in the Cup tournament, while the 2nd VII played in an additional competition against other schools’ 1st and 2nd teams.
Both teams performed exceptionally well, reaching their respective finals with impressive victories over schools such as Epsom, St John’s Leatherhead, RGS Guildford, and Halliford. The 2nd VII defeated three 1st teams on their way to the final, where they faced Dunottar 1st VII. With three minutes remaining, they were two scores down but staged a remarkable comeback, scoring on the last play to force extra time. Unfortunately, a breakaway try saw them narrowly lose, but their effort was outstanding.
The 1st VII delivered superb performances throughout the day, only to be edged out in the final by London Irish ACE College, Bishop Wandsworth, again on the last play.
Reaching two finals was a fantastic achievement, and both teams represented Cranleigh sport with pride. Their success is even more impressive given that all players are also involved in the wider school sports programme, balancing commitments to hockey and football this term.
