On Wednesday a band of Lower Fifth Latinists made King Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus’ journey down Stane Street to Fishbourne Roman Palace. They learned about ancient Roman building, saw aIMG_1659 great many beautiful mosaics, and reclined on couches in an outdoor dining area. Their roof-building technique improved immeasurably and they saw some surprising skeletons.

They then travelled up the same Roman road to Bignor Villa, a farmstead on top of a hill that had previously overseen four hectares worth of land. In this one house, they saw the boom and subsequent decline of Roman civilisation in Britain, and learned as much about the history of conservation as about the people who lived in the very spots we did, but two thousand years earlier.
