During the Easter leave, the Cranleigh CCF group travelled up to Halton Camp in Lancaster for a weeks adventure training.

We arrived in time for evening meal known as “scoff” in the Army, carried out our fire drill, settled into our accommodation and spent the evening starting the Bronze NNAS course (National Navigation Award Scheme).

Cadets were split into two groups for a two day round robin of activities which included Honister Slate mine, climbing and caving.

At Honister Slate mine in the Lake District Cadets had a tour, where they learnt the history of slate mining, followed by an adrenaline filled trip through the mine. Involving Via Ferrata, zip lines, crossing a bailey bridge that was 1000 feet up before jumping 30m off it.

The climbers and cavers headed to the Yorkshire Dales. We started the day at Ingleton climbing wall where Cadets learned how to tie in and belay before climbing routes up to 6A grade belaying each other, finishing off with a bouldering session.

After a hot chocolate and a flapjack we drove to Long Churn Cave near Ingleborough hill. The cave system is perfect for beginner cavers as it has a bit of everything. Geology, abseils, tight squeezes (The Cheese Press), water and climbs.

The original plan for the last day was to climb Helvelyn in the Lake District, however after following the weather and looking at options, we decided Plan D was best. New maps purchased, we headed to the area of Malham Cove for the NNAS assessment. A beautiful part of the country famous for its limestone pavements and a Harry Potter film location. This proved to be the right decision as the Cadets stayed dry. They all performed really well in their navigation assessment whilst also learning more advanced techniques.

Overall a great week with fantastic Cadets who put their all into the activities.

Thanks to all the staff who gave up their holiday to make this happen.
