Our Year 12 students were treated to a fascinating and thought-provoking talk by Dr Bahar Ghezelayagh, Professor of Financial Economics at the University of East Anglia, titled “How do we make decisions when it comes to choosing Efficiency vs. Fairness?”

Dr Ghezelayagh began by introducing the scope and relevance of Economics in our everyday lives, highlighting the important choices faced not only by individuals but also by wider economic agents. She touched on some of the key challenges society faces today, setting the scene for deeper exploration into the tension between what is efficient and what is fair.

The students were introduced to concepts such as Pareto Efficiency and Game Theory—made all the more memorable through a hands-on, chocolate-based example that brought the theory to life. The session concluded with an interactive quiz, which saw students compete for a place at the top of the leaderboard. Congratulations to Ashton, who came out on top and was awarded a copy of Tim Harford’s Fifty Things That Made the Modern Economy.

A huge thank you to Dr Ghezelayagh for such an engaging and insightful session, which has undoubtedly sparked new interest in Economics and its role in shaping the world around us.
