The even greater poignancy of the occasion this year – gathering for 11 o’clock on the 11th day of the 11th month in the 11th year – was much enhanced by a service of particularly high quality. At the heart of the event was one of the most powerful and moving addresses those present had heard. Major General Tim Cross CBE focused our minds on the sheer numbers who died in the two World Wars. But he also made us acutely conscious of the personal tragedy of each death, for all were a son, a father, a husband or a brother. Surrounding and enhancing his words was the contrasting combination of spectacularly hearty singing and thunderous percussion, with silent reflection and sharply-defined brass. The Cranleigh community gathered, including many not normally able to do so, and remembered, but did so with renewed thankfulness.
