On Tuesday November 14th the LVI Design set went up to London University to attend a series of dedicated seminars entitled ‘Inspired by Design’ aimed specifically at students studying the subject at A-Level.
The department has been involved with these talks for the past two years and previous seminars have included talks by Richard Seymour (co-founder of SeymourPowell Design, a world leader in Product and Industrial Design) who has also been chair of the design council and a champion of design education; Joe Perry from the Virgin Atlantic design team talking about the role that design has to play in market share (and also about the exciting Virgin Galactic project), and also presentations from the design team behind Samsung mobile phones.
This year we were promised an exciting and topical programme and we were not disappointed. There were talks delivered from a myriad of design professionals including Jon Marshall (Studio Director at BarberOgersby) whose team designed the torch for the London Olympic games in 2012. Michael Korn from ‘Kwickscreen’ was also speaking and he explained the development of an idea for a simple needle safety tray for use in hospitals as well as the innovative designs of a series of portable screens which help hospitals and schools make better use of their space.
The aim of these talks is to offer insight into the world of commercial design and engineering and inspire the youngsters of today who want to move into the creative and intellectual disciplines of Design and related industries. There were approximately 200 students in attendance from all over the country. Our design group agreed that the visit was both informative, fun and provided a raft of excellent material in support of the A-Level Product Design course that we currently offer them here at Cranleigh.
