The last day of term saw 18 students, 5 staff and 2 dogs powering their way up the M6 to tackle the Lake District fells as their Gold D of E practice expedition.

Beginning in Patterdale, with the sweep of Helvellyn in front of them, the team headed west over several ridges taking in the glorious valley of Grasmere, glimpsing Scafell in the distance before turning north and finishing with the classic “Cat Bells” ridge into Portinscale (Keswick).  While wild camping for two nights, various teams witnessed a mountain rescue taking place, slept in a cave and discovered why we advise people to always wear shoes!

The weather was glorious, although there was still snow on the tops of the hills, and one team discovered how deep this could be.   Rain on the last day justified the mantra,?????????????????????? “Waterproof…not just showerproof.”

The teams worked well together, learning as they went along.  Attention to detail when route planning and then navigating will stand them in good stead for their assessment later this term.  The Lakes delivered, as always, spectacular scenery, great campsites  and fun, challenging?????????????????????? routes.

We look forward to the assessment after exams.

Many thanks to STP, HM, LECS and DCR for their help and support.
