Whilst the sixth form students enjoyed the Culture Summit last week, 32 lower fifth form Classicists went to discover Roman London. They started the day admiring a piece of Roman fort, perfectly preserved in the heart of the city, before visiting the Museum of London where theyRoman London considered a variety of aspects of Roman life in London, ranging from religious cults, to culinary delights, such as stuffed dormice! They saw the first inscription to mention ‘The People of London’ and viewed the various jobs available at the time.

Thereafter they walked to the Guildhall, enjoying the sunshine and eating lunch outside, before going underneath the Guildhall, where the remains of a Roman Amphitheatre can still be seen, and taking the opportunity to discuss bones with an expert. Inside the Art Gallery, they discussed and analysed a terrifying painting of Clytemnestra, the woman who killed her husband Agamemnon upon his return from Troy. A walking tour through the city, admiring the classically inspired buildings, ending at the Tower of London was enjoyed by all and the day ended with an ice-cream. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore a different side to our nation’s capital.
