A Level student, Lewis Bedford, has won first prize in an essay competition run by Oxford University. His essay, entitled: ‘Are Humans Destined to Live in Cities?’ beat entries from all over the world in the Contemporary Worlds category of the Staton Essay prize.

The Prize, run by Regents Park College, Oxford, is an interdisciplinary essay competition open to all students currently studying in Year 12 anywhere in the UK or its equivalent in the EU and internationally. The aim of the competition is to give school pupils the opportunity to explore connections between the subjects they study or are interested in, to develop their independent research skills, and to encourage them to consider interdisciplinary courses at university.

Lewis will be collecting his award plus one hundred and fifty pounds prize money, at a special awards dinner at the College during Long Leave.

“I was very surprised to hear I had won and really pleased that I entered. I particularly enjoy social and human geography. I would like to thank Miss Parkes for all her help and encouragement during the drafting process,” he said.

Currently studying Geography, Politics and English, Lewis aspires next year to undertake a Land Economy degree at Cambridge.
