Competitors in the RAF Schools Aerospace Challenge 2017 had to design a UAV transport aircraft for the RAF and this year’s challenge was won by an independent team which included Cranleigh Lower Sixth student, Harry Pite.
The top 12 entries nationwide were invited to a week’s aerospace experience at Cranfield University Summer School. Highlights included visits to the largest aircraft, the Airlander 10, to secure access areas at jet engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce and defence company Marshall Aerospace, a wind tunnel experience and an indoor free fall skydive.
Based on individual team performance, three teams were selected to attend the awards ceremony at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London. The award consisting of a trophy and £3,000 was presented to the winners, while runners up St Paul’s School and Wellbeck Defence Sixth Form College each received £1,000.
