The Redgrave Theatre Society enjoyed a weekend trip to see The Jungle, a powerful dramatic portrayal of life in the Calais migrant camp.
The set design transported the audience into the world of the Calais camp, with the cast moving around the audience. The performance space was transformed into the camp’s Afghan Cafe, with the audience sitting at long tables that became walkways for the actors, providing an immersive experience and helping to show the audience the reality of life in such a crowded and dangerous camp.
The Society was shown how a random mix of refugees turned into a town of more than 6,000 citizens, all living with a daily sense of hope and desperation. It taught us that, even in the most horrific situations, hope can still exist.
I would highly recommend The Jungle; it is a fantastic, heartfelt and inspiring production. It had a huge impact on me, reiterating how much we take for granted these days and how privileged we are in this world. I am already looking forward to the next trip and I hope others will have the chance to share similar experiences.
