The Under 16 Boys stormed through to reach the Regional Indoor Hockey Finals at Whitgift last week. The following day the Under 16 Girls beat off the stiff opposition and also qualified for the Regional Indoor Finals.
After a lacklustre start, the boys played an epic match against Whitgift that bodes well for the Finals, whilst the girls played at a consistently high level to come out of a potential “group of death’.”
The Boys started with a 3-2 win over Simon Langton having been a goal behind. Against Reeds, they once again went one down before recovering to a relatively comfortable 2-1 win, which could have been more bearing in mind the number of short corners gained.
With Whitgift and Cranleigh having won both their games to qualify, the match between the two was to decide seedings in the Finals.
Whitgift had plundered 16 goals in their two games, but Cranleigh ‘woke up’ and a titanic match ensued with the best hockey of the day on show. Nip and tuck, Whitgift were leading 3-2 when we earned a short corner with just seconds to go. After a good save and goalmouth scramble, they managed to clear and so win this closely fought match.
The Under 16 girls started with a tough encounter against Great Marlow but a goal in each half resulted in a 2-0 victory. The next game against Godolphin and Latymer was equally difficult and this time only decided by a solitary goal in our favour.
After two good wins, similar to the boys, the match versus St Teresa’s would decide seedings and once again it was a tense affair with some really good skills both defensively and offensively from both sides. With St Teresa’s winning 2-1, Cranleigh pushed hard for an equaliser only to be caught on the break and conceded the decisive goal.
