The U18 Boys and Girls both reached their Regional Indoor Hockey Finals, joining the U16 Boys and Girls who got through to theirs last week.
The U18 Boys had already played a Preliminary round, in which they comfortably beat Skinners and Lord Wandsworth before coming from 0-2 down to beat a very strong King Edwards, Southampton (KES) side with a really positive second-half performance.
Their first game was against a technically sound St Lawrence side but they produced a stunning performance to win 3-0. Next up was St George’s and Cranleigh was on top at the start but failed to capitalise on some short corners. The match then see-sawed resulting in a 2-2 draw.
Needing a win to qualify for the Finals, we scored goals in each half to beat a determined Kent College team.
The following day the U18 Girls started with their toughest game against Wellington, but came out of the traps and put the opposition under pressure from the start, resulting in four short corners, which resulted in no goals. Wellington came back into the match and won the game 1-0 in the second half with a penalty flick.
Cranleigh needed to win the other two matches and started with a strong 6-2 demolition of KES. Peter Symonds had improved throughout the tournament and went one up in the last game. Drawing level just before half-time, Cranleigh piled on the pressure in the second half and were finally rewarded with a 2-1 win.
There were some really good performances in certain games and it’s extremely pleasing to have all four teams in the regional finals, but we still have some work to do before the U16s finals this Sunday and the U18s on December 9th.
