We were delighted to welcome Mr James Tennant to give this term’s lecture on his experiences around the world prospecting for minerals.

After a highly informative introduction illustrating the ever-growing demand for mined commodities and the economics (and indeed politics) behind the global mining industry, he gave an engaging informal talk about the trials and tribulations of working in the remoter parts of Africa, the practicalities of fieldwork and the very real distinction between academic geological research and the hard-nosed economic truths of mining.

The talk concluded with lots of questions from the keen geologists present and a chance to play with and identify some mystery ore samples.

Many thanks to James for taking the time to come down and talk to us.
