Thirteen members of the Sixth Form and four staff enjoyed an amazing trip to the 150th Open at St Andrews in July.
The team played a small but high profile role in this the most iconic of the major championships, and the biggest sporting evening in the country, as we had the responsibility for operating one of the emblematic yellow scoreboards by the 18th green. The team were widely complimented on how efficiently we ran the board and in some high pressurised moments with many quick changes needed for example on the thrilling last afternoon; it was great for the students to hear the cheers of the crowd as they changed the leaders names on the board as Cameron Smith came through the field to beat home favourite Rory McIlroy.
There was also plenty of opportunity to watch the golf and follow the worlds best, such as Tiger Woods, around this historic and beautiful links course. The most special memories for the group were probably having passes that allowed us backstage access to the players around the driving range and sponsors hospitality with the students getting freebies, selfies and fist pumps with many of the top players including walking alongside Rory McIlroy towards the first tee on the final afternoon!
The weather was largely kind which made it a very comfortable stay at the Open Camping Village conveniently located right next to the course and close to the beach for evening games of beach cricket!
