On Wednesday 27th November, we welcomed Mr Andy Meyers to adjudicate the senior section of this year’s Jack Cook Strings Competition. Andy has had a multi-faceted career as school Director of Music, a pianist and horn player, composer and conductor. He is currently musical director of both the Kingston Chamber Orchestra and the Mid-Sussex Sinfonia.

The evening showcased some much-loved classics from the repertoire such as the Prelude from JS Bach’s Suite in G major (Len W. – viola) and the opening movement of Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major (Evelyn G). Bach and Mozart are bold and exposing choices for a competition, yet both performers were praised for their technical assurance. Charlie M. (violin) also gave a lyrical first airing of the first movement of Barber’s Violin Concerto, to which he will subsequently return for his ARSM Diploma this term and a performance with the Merriman Concert Orchestra next term. The victor of the category was Leah S. (cello), securing the prize for her characterful rendition of Kapustin’s Elegy. This performance demonstrated sound navigation of the high register, stylish use of portamento, and real gusto in the jazz-influenced pizzicato section.

Thanks and recognition are due for the hard work and preparation of all the performers, their teachers and their accompanist Mr Richard Saxel. The second installment of the senior competitions, featuring woodwind, brass and piano categories, will take place on Friday 31st January.

Kevin Weaver, Head of Strings
