Iceland is truly a highlight to any Geographer but particularly experiencing it in the snow, mere moments before Christmas. Aside from a packed schedule full of activities, the students truly got to experience the magic of the snow and fire within the landscape. Some particular highlights were seeing the expressions on the faces of the students as they got to help bake bread and boil egg within a natural geothermal vent, and then try them. From walking through an ice-cave, to bathing in blue lagoon or watching lava be made, provided the stark contrast that exemplifies Iceland. Following the recent eruptions, we were also able to see the fresh lava fields and the walls put in place to stop the oncoming flow, meters from where we stood. Bracing the cold temperatures in pyjamas to run out to see the northern lights will be a moment I hope all the staff and students alike will always cherish.

Going to Iceland was such a fun experience, I enjoyed every second of it! It’s so hard to choose my favourite part but I think that the glacier hike was so fun. It was such a unique experience, learning about the history of the glacier and the natural formations surrounding it, hiking on it and seeing and trying the water that is running down the glacier. I also really enjoyed learning about the folklore of Iceland from our tour guide, trying tomato soup made in geothermal greenhouses, riding famous Icelandic horses, relaxing in the blue lagoon towards the end of the trip and all of the other amazing activities that we did. Finally, the experience of being able to see the northern lights was incredible.
