Target Sprint is an internationally recognised air rifle discipline that fuses athleticism with precision. This fast-paced and exhilarating sport combines running and target shooting — with competitors completing three 400m runs, each broken up by shooting rounds at knockdown targets. It’s simple, it’s fast, and it’s a lot of fun!
Since 2019, the Cadet Council for Rifle Shooting (CCRS) has been working to establish a National Cadet Target Sprint competition. After several delays, this year Cranleigh was proud to host the first ever closed Cadet championship, open to all three services, by adapting our annual Cranleigh Open into a full weekend event.
Saturday began with introductory lessons on equipment and procedures, followed by the heats in various age categories. Due to the unusually high temperatures, races were shortened to 200m for safety — but that didn’t stop the Cadets from giving it their all and thoroughly enjoying the competition. After the heats, finalists were announced and the Cadets either headed home or returned to Pirbright Camp.
Finals day on Sunday brought cooler conditions and a return to the full regulation 400m course. With times counting toward the official GB rankings, there was a real sense of focus and determination. Set against the impressive backdrop of the Pavilion, the Cadets delivered outstanding performances with many achieving personal bests.
The top five in each category qualified for the National Final, which will take place in Wales this September. We’re incredibly proud that James W secured a silver medal in the U16 CCF category — a fantastic achievement!
The weekend concluded with a fast and entertaining relay race, which was a brilliant way to wrap up the event.
A huge congratulations to all Cadets who competed, and sincere thanks to Lou Dickers for her tireless efforts across the weekend, as well as to CCRS for their invaluable support with timing and organisation.
