Classics Talk_Prof Ken DowdenOn Tuesday 17 September Cranleigh School welcomed Professor Ken Dowden, Head of Philosophy, Theology and Religion at the University of Birmingham. The talk was attended by nearby schools including George Abbot, Charterhouse and Guildford High School.

Professor Dowden presented on Virgil’s Aeneid Book 4 and clarified the structure of the book, highlighting the moments of tension and contrasting them with extended descriptions. His enthusiasm for the subject brought the text to life through animated readings, comparisons to orchestral symphonies and through depictions of the story from an ancient Roman manuscript now lying in the Vatican. All in all a thoroughly interesting discussion that gave real insight into Virgil’s creative process.
