For the second year in succession Cranleigh are the Girls’ U16 National Hockey Champions!
Having won their way through the qualifying rounds last term they travelled to Cannock for the final stages of this competition on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, with the prospect of three matches in the group stages before a potential final show down. Tuesday saw them get off to a storming start, beating the Perse School 8-0: they followed this with a narrow 1-0 win against Leeds Grammar to put them in a strong position for the second day.
A 2-1 win against Clifton saw them through to the final where they met Denstone College: an exciting match followed with Cranleigh going 1-0 down. Focus and determination was second to none in the second half, however, and a ‘four goal blitz’ (Charlotte Calnan 2; Megan Batchelor; Liv Camsey) saw them lift the national title at the end of two exhausting days of hockey.
We are extremely proud of all the girls and much credit must go to their coaches, Richard Organ and David Boggitt.
