On Tuesday 25th February, a Cranleigh Fives team made their way to Harrow to take part in the U16 National Qualifying tournament. Fives is a growing sport at Cranleigh, and many of our boys had never played in a tournament of any kind before. In spite of this, up against experienced players from across the country, Cranleigh put on a superb display, with three out of four pairs making it into the second half of this tough competition.

Our first pair, Luke H and Sachin S, played the best we have ever seen, defeating three pairs who overcame them last year, and making it to the Semi-Finals. Losing to Aldenham, the eventual winners, they then beat a strong Mill Hill pair in the third place playoff to make it five wins out of six. An excellent performance.

Novices Freddie H and Oliver S had a tougher time, going down to the eventual finalists in their initial group, and then finishing last in the plate. Charlie P and Oliver McC, having never played together before, impressed everyone by making it to the third round, and in the words of the Harrow Head Coach are ‘naturally gifted players’. Our second pair of Chris B and Carsten C made it into the Quarter-Finals, and ended up winning the Plate Competition with a hard fought victory over Ipswich.

Most importantly, all the boys had a great experience, played more Fives than they ever have before, and have gained a huge amount of confidence in their abilities. We look forward to the U14 competition in a couple of weeks’ time.
