For those of you who are new to the Cranleigh community, we have a strong partnership with Beyond Ourselves, an NGO that has been working with Community Schools in the Copperbelt region of Zambia since 2008. Their goal is to provide quality education to vulnerable children and they do this through the provision of professional guidance, financial assistance in teachers’ salaries, school feeding programmes, infrastructure and high school bursaries. Cranleigh has a very special relationship with one of these schools; Kawama Community School. Over the last 10 years, 16 teams of students and staff have visited Kawama (that’s more than 350 members of our community!) The teachers and children at Kawama have become our friends and we are sad not to be able to visit them this October as we normally do. Please do look at our page on the school website for the latest updates and photos from all our previous visits.

This year has obviously been challenging and the schools in Zambia were shut from March to mid-September. Despite the limitations, the Beyond Ourselves staff team in Zambia have been keeping themselves very busy and a number of new initiatives have begun. These include the development of a thriving teacher training Facebook community and a Whatsapp mentoring and training programme, as well as the development of a new resource website for Zambian teachers, and a Jolly Phonics radio programme that is broadcast regularly across Zambia. Visit their new website to find out more.

Beyond Ourselves is also delighted to have been accepted onto the Big Give Christmas Challenge which means that donations to their projects will be doubled during the week of 1st to 8th December. Click here to find out more.
