On Friday the under 16 boys were Surrey runners-up without losing a match and qualified for the South East regional finals on Sunday 28th November.

Starting with a tough game against a well-coached Lingfield side we had more possession and created more chances than them in the first half whilst they were threatening on the break. The second half continued in the same vein but we couldn’t score so had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Caterham were next and we played with more structure and took an early lead. After doubling our advantage Caterham got a goal back but we saw it out for a 2-1 victory.

So to the big game against St George’s playing on their ‘large sized home turf’ in their stunning new hall. It was a ding-dong battle with both sides difficult to break down. We scored first before they equalised and it ended 1-1.

Following the next couple of matches we knew we just had to beat RGS Guildford to qualify irrespective of the final game between St George’s and Lingfield. We took an early lead from a short corner and completely controlled the game though failed to kill it off with a second goal. Our 1-0 win however ensured qualification and with St George’s beating Lingfield we came second on goal difference.

We played better and better throughout the tournament with both more composure and more connections between players that will stand us in good stead at the regionals.

Squad: Oli A., Barney B., James D., Toby K., Marcus M., Louis P., Jack T., Harry W.
