A couple of weeks ago teams from the 16 hockey Performance Centres nationwide played against each other in Nottingham with Cranleigh well represented in the Guildford teams.
First up were the Under 15 boys with Matt H. and Louis P. beating Durham and South Midlands 4-0 and 3-1 respectively with Matt scoring in the first and Louis in the second. So to the crunch game in the pool against Weybridge who had also beaten the same two teams – a tight contest that ended in neither side being separated and a 0-0 draw meant that Weybridge qualified just on goal difference. In the new runners-up pool they were well beaten by Tonbridge 0-5 before drawing 2-2 with East Midlands and finishing with a 3-0 victory over Taunton with Matt scoring in the penultimate game and Louis in the final one. Following these matches both Matt and Louis have been asked to attend some initial England assessments in September.
The Under 17s girls started after the Under 15s finished and Charlotte B. was playing in the girls’ side from Guildford. After a convincing 6-0 victory over Durham in which Charlotte scored the first goal, they came up against a strong South Midlands side. Having taken an early lead, they found themselves 3-1 down before another goal saw a tight finish but no more goals. Their final pool game against Weybridge was a ding-dong affair with Guildford going one up, 2-1 up, 2-3 down before Charlotte got the equaliser just before time. This left them second in their pool and their runners-up pool started with a 6-2 defeat of Tonbridge with Charlotte scoring the first and last goals. A 1-2 loss to East Midlands was followed by a 2-1 win over Taunton to leave them winning their pool on goal difference with three sides winning two games each.
The Under 17 boys had four Cranleigh players – Barney B., Sammy D., Jamie F. and Toby K. They started with a 2-0 win over Durham in which Sammy scored the first. After going behind to South Midlands they ran out 3-1 winners and finished their pool with a 3-2 victory over Weybridge with Sammy getting two. So to the Winners Pool and they turned round a deficit to beat Southampton 2-1 in the first game with Sammy on the scoresheet again. Unfortunately they then lost 0-1 to Northwood and drew 1-1 with Taunton to leave them third in the top pool. Following these matches Sammy has been asked to attend some initial England assessments in September.
