On the evening of Wednesday 22nd of January Cranleigh School hosted a Public Speaking competition called Youth Speaks, organised by the Rotary Club, in the School Reading Room. Three schools participated: Glebelands, Duke of Kent, and Cranleigh, each entering teams into both the Intermediate and Senior categories.  The Cranleigh teams were selected through the house public speaking competition, with the winners of both the Senior and Junior sections going on to represent Cranleigh in this inter-school competition.

???????????????????????????????The intermediate round, featuring a Cranleigh team of South girls; Abi Lord (L5th) Amelie Bickenson (4th) and Ellie Williamson (L5th) was hard-fought and presented four compelling speeches with the majority of the arguments based on the media and issues stemming from these developments. One of the two Duke of Kent teams were the eventual winners but Amelie Bickenson was awarded the prize for the best main speaker.

???????????????????????????????The senior round was equally engaging and enlightening, with each school entering a team of clearly talented public speakers.  However, the Cranleigh team, made up of Charlotte Tristem (L6th), Ellie McAleese (U5th) and Genie Barreto (U6th,) with their argument discussing ‘Designer Babies’ and the issues surrounding this topic, were clear winners, with Ellie and Genie winning best main speaker and best proposer of thanks respectively.

This win secured the senior team a place in the regional semi-final phase of this national competition.

Poppy Glaister (U5th)
