The evening of Friday 28th January saw the welcome return of Cranleigh’s annual Sally Beecham Vocal Competition. Last held in November 2019 it was a chance to see how our singers have developed over the pandemic period and, for our lower two years, to experience the event for the first time and make their mark.

There were some obvious nerves beforehand but a full, encouraging and receptive audience of staff, students and parents added to a thoroughly enjoyable evening of song. The programme featured a range of repertoire from Demi Lovato to Monteverdi and the musical ‘Jekyll and Hyde’. Performances were given by all voice types (including countertenors) in multiple languages and the standard was high throughout. Unfortunately, as in any competition, there could only be one winner in each category. Therefore, Ted S. was awarded the junior prize for his clear and characterful performance of Lerner and Loewe’s ‘On the street where you live’ and Maisie R. won the senior prize for an engaging interpretation of Frank Wildhorn’s ‘In his eyes’. It really was a shame that there had to be ‘winners’ as there were so many others that could easily have been awarded the prize.

A big thank you to Mr Scriven and Mr Saxel for rehearsing and accompanying the students and all the VMTs who work so hard with our students here at Cranleigh.
