This time of year is busy for the Beyond Ourselves team in Zambia. Every year, the team (who are usually assisted by the Cranleigh students) interview every student at Kawama Community School and another local school called Greater Joy. The children come with their families and the aim is to monitor the students’ situation and to provide extra help and support if needed. This is proving particularly important during these COVID times when unemployment has risen and food security has deteriorated. Over 500 students were interviewed and Dan, the Director of Beyond Ourselves in Zambia, took some fantastic photos of the children. It is great news that Kawama Community School, led by Head Teacher Mary Kumwenda, was able to continue providing nutritious meals for the children throughout the Lockdown period.

The team have also been going full steam ahead with Jolly Phonics literacy training and have run a number of workshops and refresher days in the Copperbelt region, including at Kawama Community School. The programme is aiming to train 1500 teachers by April 2021, impacting over 60,0000 students. Like many other organisations, this has been a tough year financially for Beyond Ourselves and they are hoping to raise £16,500 in this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge to continue their mentoring, teacher training and literacy programmes into next year.
