With the combined excitement of a new school year and the opening of our new boarding house, the Martlet girls came together on Saturday 14th September for our first charity event – a sponsored Sleep Out in aid of Centrepoint UK. For one night only the girls gave up their beds, home comforts, phones and iPads to bed down in the School Quad in sleeping bags, cardboard boxes and blankets to experience a small part of what life is like for the thousands of 16 to 25 year olds Centrepoint supports each year. Whilst we were extremely lucky with the weather, it was sobering to know that people are forced to sleep rough in far colder, dirtier and wetter conditions for weeks, months or even years.

The Sleep Out allowed the girls across all year groups to bond as a house and there was a real buzz before we headed to the quad at 8pm. Along with hot chocolate and marshmallows, there was plenty of chatting, singing and games led by the prefect team which was all good fun after a busy week of lessons and matches. Later on in the evening, as the darkness began to draw in, the girls were invited to reflect on how fortunate they are and write down things that they are grateful for; this banner is now displayed in the house.

Arising around 6am the following morning, the girls were up bright and early to think about their experiences whilst being treated to bacon sandwiches cooked by Martlet tutors Mr Hardy and Miss Greenwood. It was then back to house and time to sort out the boxes of shampoo, sanitary towels, soap and toothpaste which we had been collecting for Centrepoint in the run up to the event.

Centrepoint are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year and we are very proud to have chosen them as our first charity to support! Thank you to everyone who supported the event and especially Mr Hardy, Miss Greenwood, Mr Scott, Dr Ward and Mrs Constable who were so generous with their time over the weekend.
