Lower Sixth artists had a challenging day confronting contemporary artwork at Tate Modern and the Saatchi Gallery. The main show at Tate was of work by painter Marlene Dumas. Dumas, who was born in South Africa but lives and works in Amsterdam, was showing intense paintings that explore controversial issues through a concern for how colour and mark making affect the reading of media-sourced imagery. At the Saatchi Gallery, the work by an international range of artists explored contemporary culture through an engagement with the mass media and advertising. Our Cranleighians looked, sketched and made notes as they sought inspiration for current and future work.
